			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the US, out-of-home advertising is a $7 billion industry. In India, outdoor advertising accounts for a meagre 6% of the total industry. Traditionally, Indian outdoor advertising has been stuck on billboards, not to mention the current trend of outdoor vans which seem to cut out a pretty sorry figure for any advertising campaign - (ask the creative and account planning teams in any agency). True, in a city like New Delhi where billboards have been banned for a long time the van option is the only option for many clients, in spite of the fact that they seem to be somewhat out-of-place on the road.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.google.com">Google’s</a> patent application refers to setting-up of an electronic, geographically distributed network of displays. Each display would be connected to an advertising content server on the Internet or a private network. The display would download its content from the ad server based on the location of the display and intelligent algorithms deciding what material to target to the likely audience exposed to the display. Imagine this with the context of Google’s all powerful search engine, which is capable of churning out highly targeted ads on its Website.</p>
<p>If Google enters the fray with its proprietary technology, the Outdoor Advertising landscape will change for ever. It might completely disrupt the outdoor media planning models &#8212; will media agencies become redundant? </p>
<p>Firstly, client would be able to recycle content from other media like TV and Cinema and play it out on Google’s displays. Secondly, the clever targeting and positioning of ad content dynamically retrieved from an Internet based server will immediately make out-of-home advertising truly effective all of a sudden. Currently, there are many respected models for determining reach and visibility for in-home media, but none for outdoor media. With the mine of information that Google already has with its search engine and its variants (noteworthy being <a href="http://earth.google.com">Google Earth</a>, <a href="http://maps.google.com">Google Maps</a> and Google Local), the search engine giant is definitely going to give the agencies in this business a run for their money.</p>
